Patient Perspectives on Palmoplantar Pustulosis

Green Juices and Palmoplantar Pustulosis: Why Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition Matters

Palmoplantar Pustulosis Cure and juicing

I know green juices can sound like wellness clichés. But there are specific reasons why certain vegetables and compounds are helpful for PPP, and it comes down to their effect on inflammation and gut health. This post explains the mechanism and tells you which ingredients to prioritise.

How I discovered juicing
Our journey into the world of juicing began when my husband and I watched "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead," a 2010 documentary that follows Australian Joe Cross on a 60-day juice fast to regain his health. Joe was suffering from a rare autoimmune skin disease similar to palmoplantar pustulosis, which was an immediate eye-opener for me.
The documentary highlights the importance of the vitamins and minerals we get from fruits and vegetables, and why we need to consume them daily. Although we all know we should eat our greens, not many people understand why, or what actually happens inside the body when we do.

Why conventional medicine was not enough for me
When I was diagnosed with palmoplantar pustulosis, my doctors told me there was nothing to be done apart from immune suppressant drugs, biologics. These types of medications suppress the immune system further, and carry serious risks including potential fetal defects if you become pregnant within two years of stopping them. From my perspective, there had to be another way.
I reasoned that if I had compromised my immune system through stress, a poor diet, and antibiotics, there must be a way to rebuild it. That thinking led me to green juices, and eventually to full remission.

Why green juices specifically help with PPP
Green juices provide concentrated vitamins and minerals that your cells need to function properly. When your cells are nourished, cravings reduce and the urge to snack on sugar diminishes, which matters enormously for PPP, because sugar drives the inflammation that triggers flares.
Green juices also feed the good bacteria in the gut, which is essential for a functional immune system. When you have an autoimmune disease like PPP, the body can become overloaded with toxins that exacerbate symptoms and contribute to systemic inflammation. Green juices support the liver and kidneys, the organs responsible for filtering those toxins, in a gentle, non-aggressive way.
In 2013 I did a three-day juice fast. I felt genuinely well, my skin was glowing afterward, and I lost weight without feeling hungry. That experience convinced me that what I was putting into my body was directly connected to what was happening on my skin.

Another documentary worth watching
"Super Juice Me" by Jason Vale, known as The Juice Master, follows eight people who collectively suffered from 22 different chronic diseases on a juice-only diet for 28 days. It is fascinating and well worth watching if you want more motivation to get started.

Four recipes to try
Here are the four green juice combinations I keep coming back to, and why each one works particularly well for PPP:

Green Detox, Cucumber, apple, spinach, lemon, and ginger. Ginger is a powerful anti-inflammatory and supports gut motility. Spinach provides magnesium, which many PPP patients are deficient in.

The Refreshing One, Kale, cucumber, apple, and grapefruit. Kale supports liver function and is rich in vitamin K, which works together with D3, one of the most important supplements for immune regulation.

The Green Goddess, Mint, cucumber, green apple, and pineapple. Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme with strong anti-inflammatory properties.

The Sweet Green, Pineapple, cucumber, and spinach. A gentler introduction to green juicing if you are just getting started, naturally sweet and easy to drink daily.
My daughter has slowly but surely started drinking the juices I make. She is the most important thing in my life, and her health is my main focus. Getting her to drink her greens feels like a small victory every single time.

Where to learn more
If you want to explore juicing further, I recommend Joe Cross's website Reboot With Joe and Jason Vale's website The Juice Master, both have excellent recipes and guidance for beginners.

Green juices were one piece of the puzzle that helped me heal from palmoplantar pustulosis. For the complete framework, diet, gut health, supplements, and a 90-day plan, everything is documented in my book, available on Amazon as paperback, eBook, and audiobook.
