How I Healed Palmoplantar Pustulosis (PPP) Naturally – Living Symptom-Free for 15 Years

What causes Palmoplantar Pustulosis?Åsa Kärrman
Welcome. My name is Åsa Kärrman, and this is my personal healing story. For many years, I struggled with a painful and debilitating skin condition called palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP). At its worst, it left me unable to walk, work, or live a normal life. Doctors told me there was no cure. The medications they wanted to prescribe came with frightening side effects, and none of them offered lasting relief.
Today, more than 14 years later, I am fully healed, without the use of biologics or heavy immunosuppressants. Instead, I found my way through natural approaches, lifestyle changes, and listening carefully to my body. I created this page to share my journey, provide hope, and give practical guidance to others searching for answers. If you are living with PPP, know this: you are not alone, and there is a way forward.

What Is Palmoplantar Pustulosis (PPP)?

Palmoplantar pustulosis is a rare and chronic form of psoriasis that primarily affects the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. It is characterized by:
  • Clusters of deep, painful pustules filled with non-infectious fluid.
  • Scaling, cracking, and thickened skin.
  • Severe pain when walking, standing, or using the hands.
PPP is often described as one of the most difficult forms of psoriasis to treat. It affects daily life deeply, simple tasks like holding a coffee mug or walking to the store can become unbearable.

Symptoms of PPP
  • Red, inflamed skin on palms and/or soles
  • Pustules (blisters filled with fluid) that appear and disappear in cycles
  • Cracking and peeling skin
  • Intense burning or itching sensations
  • Pain that can limit mobility and quality of life

Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause of PPP is still unknown, but research points to:
  • Smoking: Up to 95% of PPP patients are smokers or former smokers.
  • Autoimmune dysfunction: PPP is considered an immune-mediated disease.
  • Genetics: Some people may be predisposed.
  • Triggers: Stress, infections, diet, or environmental toxins can worsen symptoms.

My Story: From Flare-Ups to Freedom

My symptoms began suddenly, with small red dots on the sole of my foot, and later on blisters appearing on my hands and feet. At first, I thought it was an infection or an allergy. But soon the blisters multiplied, my skin cracked, and walking became almost impossible.

I visited several doctors, but it actually took a long time before I finally saw a dermatologist. For months I was misdiagnosed, at one point even with scabies  which delayed the right treatment and made the whole experience even more difficult

I was offered  biologics, but the list of side effects frightened me. Liver damage, increased risk of infections, long-term immune suppression,  I didn’t want to trade one health problem for another.

Instead, I decided to take a different path.

Why I Said No to Biologics

Biologic drugs can be life changing for some, but for me, they were never an option. I didn’t want to risk my long term health for temporary relief. I believed my body was trying to tell me something , that PPP wasn’t just a random skin disease, but a symptom of deeper imbalance.
I realized that if I wanted lasting healing, I needed to address the root cause.

The Turning Point: Searching for Root Causes

Instead of masking symptoms, I started researching everything I could about autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and healing through lifestyle changes.
What I discovered changed my life:
  • Smoking is one of the main triggers listed for PPP. But many people who never smoked still develop the disease. Nevertheless, I choose to quit smoking.
  • Diet and gut health play a major role in autoimmune conditions. I eliminated sugar, processed foods, and gluten, and focused on whole, anti-inflammatory foods.
  • Vitamin D and minerals were key. I learned that deficiencies are common in people with psoriasis and PPP.
  • Stress was making my flare-ups worse. Learning to slow down, rest, and support my body’s healing became part of the process.

How I Healed Naturally

Healing PPP required a holistic approach, addressing diet, lifestyle, stress, and overall health. Here’s what worked for me:

1. Anti-Inflammatory Diet
I discovered that food played a huge role in inflammation. I transitioned to a diet rich in:
  • Vegetables (especially leafy greens)
  • Proteins and omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, sardines, flaxseed)
  • Gluten-free whole foods
  • Fermented foods for gut health

At the same time, I eliminated:
  • Sugar
  • Processed foods
  • Gluten and dairy (both were triggers for me)
  • Alcohol
This reset my immune system and reduced inflammation.

2. Healing the Gut
I learned that many autoimmune conditions, including PPP, are linked to gut health. By supporting my digestion with probiotics, bone broth, and clean whole foods, my skin began to mirror the internal healing happening in my gut.

3. Stress Reduction
Stress is one of the biggest triggers for flare ups. I introduced mindfulness, yoga, and daily walks into my routine. Learning to calm my nervous system helped calm my skin.

4. Gentle Skincare
Instead of harsh creams, I used natural oils like coconut oil  to soothe cracks and dryness. This minimized irritation and allowed my skin barrier to repair.

6. Supplements That Supported Healing
I added key supplements that supported my immune system and reduced inflammation:
  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin K2
  • Zinc
  • Probiotics

Living Symptom-Free for 15+ Years

It has now been over 15 years since my last flare-up. I live without fear of the blisters returning. I walk, exercise, and live fully again. Most importantly, I no longer feel controlled by my condition.
Healing PPP naturally gave me not only my health back but also a deeper respect for my body and its ability to heal.

Why I Share My Story

When I was first diagnosed, I felt alone. Doctors gave me no hope, and online forums were filled with suffering patients who had tried everything with little success.

That’s why I created Well-Healed.com, to show others that healing is possible, even from a disease as stubborn as palmoplantar pustulosis.

I’m not a doctor, but I am living proof that the body can heal when given the right conditions.

My goal is to help others:
  • Share hope with those newly diagnosed
  • Provide practical steps for people seeking alternatives to biologics
  • Create awareness about lifestyle and environmental triggers for PPP

Final Thoughts

Healing from Palmoplantar Pustulosis is not always easy. It takes time, effort, and self-compassion. But I am living proof that remission is possible.

If you are reading this and struggling with painful hands and feet, please know: you are stronger than this disease. By addressing root causes and supporting your body, you too can find relief and possibly long-term healing.

I invite you to explore this website, read my book, and join me in spreading awareness about PPP. Together, we can make sure no one has to face this disease alone. ❤️
